FROM THE COMMANDER

Greetings Legionnaires! We are entering our last busy stretch as a Post before summer arrives. The most important date on our calendar, Memorial Day, is a day to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. As a part of that remembrance, we will be placing flags at Allouez Cemetery on Wednesday, May 20 (with a rain date of Thursday, May 21). We will retrieve the flags on Tuesday, May 26 and clean and store them shortly thereafter. Last year was a bit of a struggle to get volunteers to help with the flags. I am hoping we can get a better turnout this year as it would be a shame if we had to relinquish control of the flag placement duties at that cemetery. Memorial Day itself will also be busy with the ceremonies at Francis Sullivan’s gravesite and at Admiral Flatley Park with the United Patriotic Society. I know many treat this as an extended weekend with family and friends, but I encourage you to take an hour or two to assist with or participate in the one, some, or other events that recognize what the day is truly about.

I also want to thank our members that participated in our Color Guard / Honor Guard training in March. The activities of our Color Guard and Honor Guard provide great services to our community and the families of deceased veterans. It also makes our Post visible to the public in a positive light. While we have increased our numbers in that group, I encourage anyone interested in serving with that detail to get trained and outfitted with our full uniform. We can never have too many!

Thank you to everyone for what you do for the American Legion Family!

John Dyer

FROM THE ADJUTANT

Reminder that membership notices for 2027 will be coming out soon. You will start receiving dues notices from National sometime around June/July. Dues will be $45 again this year. You can pay by check or use the QR code at the end of the newsletter and pay online.

Message From The AUXILIARY

We are very excited to share some wonderful news about a major project your Auxiliary has been supporting. A Veteran housing program has been in development for some time in the Green Bay area called Veterans 1st of NEW. Our own Veteran and Auxiliary Unit member, Gail Nohr, is the cofounder and project manager of this much-needed initiative.

Thanks to the hard work of Gail, Mary Van Egeren, Lena Goodman, and other dedicated members, our Unit applied for and received a grant from the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation to purchase 72 chairs for donation to Veterans 1st of NEW for use in their

community room. Combined with our Unit’s contribution, this gift will total more than $10,000.

Mary Van Egren

Badger Girls State Program:

We are also deeply grateful to the Packer Give Back Organization for awarding us a $2,000 grant to support our Badger Girls State Program. We strive to sponsor as many girls as possible from the Green Bay, De Pere, Ashwaubenon, and Bay Port school districts. This outstanding week-long leadership and government (nonpolitical) program is hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary at UW Oshkosh.

Poppy Distribution Project:

May is American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Month. Each year, both the Legion and Auxiliary work together to distribute poppies in exchange for donations at local stores. This year’s dates are Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23.

If you and a friend or spouse are able to volunteer some time to help with this important project, please contact Mary Van Egeren for more information. All members of the Legion and Auxiliary should have received a letter from the Unit and Post regarding membership donations. If you did not receive the letter and would like to contribute, please send your donation to:

Help Needed:

We truly need more volunteers to help us continue our mission of serving Veterans and their families. We warmly invite you to join us, share your ideas, and make a difference. And despite rumors—we really don’t bite… often!

If you have any questions about these or other projects, please contact Mary Krutz, Treasurer, at marykrutz@twc.com. Phone calls are also welcome—please leave your name and phone number in a message, as spam calls make it difficult to answer unknown numbers. Mary Van Egren
