ORIGIN OF THE US MARINE CORPS

ree

According to Marine Corps University, on November 10, 1775 the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that "two Battalions of Marines be raised" for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, these first Marines distinguished themselves in several important operations throughout the American Revolution. When the Treaty of Paris was signed in April 1783, the Marines disbanded. In 1798 they were re-established for a quasi-war with France. They took part in operations against the Barbary pirates along the “Shores of Tripoli” and continue serving our nation well into the 21st century.
